The 20-week morphology scan is the primary screening method for foetal structural abnormalities. AI could act as a systematic second reviewer that reduces diagnostic variability.
The European ECHO-AI project, funded by Horizon Europe, has begun its clinical validation phase in 15 Spanish hospitals. The consortium has trained deep learning models on more than 200,000 expert-labelled ultrasound images to automatically identify key foetal structures and flag anomalies in cardiac, cerebral, renal and limb anatomy.
Preliminary results
In the pilot phase, the model demonstrated a sensitivity of 87% for major congenital heart defects and a specificity of 94%. For central nervous system anomalies, sensitivity reached 91%.
At Badagine
Our professionals perform morphology scans with high-resolution equipment following ISUOG protocols. We monitor AI tool development to incorporate them once validated and approved for clinical use.
